Bestowed a second chance

He hid out in life
fearful of all strife

Engrossed amply, had a ball
dinked around without clues
lead no worthwhile life at all
thought Life here to amuse

Then rosy hued vigor drained
he veered off course, pace dropped
a purpose no longer feigned
Pretense gone. Thank God, flopped

Then bestowed a second chance
to pull his weight, not just prance

Unrestrained to be entertained?

People wobbly, down weighted
munching on escapist diet
bodily temples sated
stuffed they’re suffering disquiet

Out on shopping paths cutthroat
for latest jolt quick fix
while can’t be bothered to vote
no time for politics

Shall they ever see themselves
as with manners oafish?
Unwittingly pushy elves
so utterly foolish

To instant gratification
they feel divinely ordained
In inane alienation
must always be entertained

What do folks so disconnected
think if they hear climate ‘change’?
Might their response be expected:
‘No exchange policy? Strange!’

These are observations not lies
watched most of them with my own eyes

+)
-elves = here: ace consumers, living out their acquisitive dreams, their pointed elf ears (antennas actually) honing in on best deals on the most popular items

Those topangued not so easily harangued

Southern California:

One seeming seamless mall
with roars ‘cariphonia’
and merchandising gall

Of this consists its essence:
Ever fleeting new thrills!
Where to escape its presence?
High up in dusty hills!

The clear-eyed who wisely topangued
won’t so easily be harangued

+)
-‘cariphonia’ = the sound of cars in heavy traffic
-topangued = to move up in the hills of Topanga, away from LA

Hey, Thucydides, that was then. This is now and how!

“Of all manifestations of power, restraint impresses men most.”
-Thucydides (c.460 B.C.– c.400 B.C.)

If restraint implies ‘voluntary’ restraint would we these days recognize something so over the top quaint?

Yes, in Antiquity
but regarded now
as mere obliquity
Here is why & how:

Today’s absence of restraint
sustains mindless shopping
above all for more war paint
unjust wars not stopping

Fans fiery fire
absent qualms
by our Empire
dropping bombs

While voices of restraint
raised rarely, echo faint

So up the volts, you dolts!

Speedy thin ice skating
a dared dalliance
Perhaps fascinating
if as vain valiance?

When our nerve endings are worn
they’ll need most frequent jolts
When in the mundane forlorn
must keep upping the volts!

You have only use for those acts
or attempts captivating
which after hyped up to its max
shall still feel scintillating

Mirage creators, slick myth narrators

In these so called ‘debates’
we’re fed thin gruel
while opens all floodgates
to base & cruel

Those scripted ‘debaters’:
Mirage creators
in-the-wings dictators
slick myth narrators

Discombobulated
populace fretful
seen our hopes deflated
by priors fateful

Even so we keep up our drool
the sure fate of the hapless fool!

Yet another bait & switch

The ‘One Nation Exceptional’
now resoundingly unmasked
while ‘Greatness’ just conceptional
still being pitched unabashed:

Ready for another bait & switch?
He’s prickly, prone to toddler fits
This time around plays in mega kitsch
short on manners, knowledge & wits

Howls in a hurricane of glitz
klutzy & shallow clamor
disingenuous repeat fits
A narcissistic scammer

A vainglorious con artist
from reality unhitched
Voters not informed or smartest
being too easily sales pitched!

Mindless consumer minions
though can’t be bothered with facts
entitled to their opinions
as propaganda distracts:

whether in The Beltway or backwoods
sadly they buy a sick bill of goods

+)
-The Beltway = the Washington, DC power elite
-One Nation Exceptional:
“The United States has always been corrupt, savage and brutal. It has always been wildly dysfunctional and hypocritical. But now, thanks to a president-elect who is loudly ignorant and utterly devoid of impulse control the mask is off. The horrible truth about the United States can no longer be denied. Trump epitomizes truth in advertising. We’re a nasty, crappy country. President Trump suits us fine.” – Ted Rall

Slapping high-fives while our Species nosedives

BACK THEN those who resisted & bravely persisted:

For a ‘just vision’
they lost their jobs
landed in prison
beaten by mobs

Cruelly confined
gruesomely grilled
majorly maligned
some even killed

Still courageous & strong
stood against what was wrong

*

WHILE NOW in these splendid times:

Such actions quaint
would involve restraint
might make us faint
so favor complaint

Habitat we extirpate
while keep slapping high-five
from duties we abdicate
while Species takes nosedive!

What?! Slowing global warming
through ‘personal’ action?
Few, despite plenty warning
seem adjust one fraction

In these thrilling times ‘morality’
suffers high rate of mortality
